Elhanan The Pitcher 2023
Oil on Canvas 2023
78 x 60 inches
The painting, Elhanan (The Pitcher), takes as its subject a figure in the act of throwing a ball.
The title references a biblical figure by the name of Elhanan, who is mention in the second book of Samuel as being the one who Killed Goliath. Later corrected to killing Goliath's brother.
The figure is influenced by two sources in art history. These sources are from the Baroque sculptor Bernini’s David statue, and the other being the Borghese Gladiator, from ancient antiquity, which influenced Bernini. In the guise of a pitcher in the act of throwing a ball, its meaning is about that moment when a person, or people have to confront a foe, a situation, a fear, or an injustice that seems overwhelming and insurmountable. It’s about action, giving it your best shot no matter what, and having courage to stand up and face the existential uncertainties of life that we as human beings all face.

The Aficionado (The Pitcher) is an oil on canvas painting. The painting takes as its subject a baseball pitcher in the act of throwing a pitch. The figure is composed of forms that are found in industrial architecture. The painting is an homage to my father who was a factory worker and who pitched in the minor leagues after the second world war, as well as being an aficionado on baseball. The title and the concept is based on a 1912 cubist work called the “Aficionado, (The Torero)”, by Pablo Picasso. Which was a painting of his father who was an expert on the corrida (bullfight).

Figure With An Umbrella 2006
Acrylic And Collage On Canvas 2006
20 x 16 inches
The collage painting, Figure With an Umbrella was completed in 2006. It was a part of a series of three paintings, that represent a figure umbrella in the midst of a downpour, while his umbrella is falling apart. It is an image that express the feeling of vulnerability and at times a sense helplessness. However, it is my hope that it expresses the drive and determination of weathering the storm. The figure leans forward, so it also represents the act of confronting what is thrown at us and doing our best to move forward and to overcome and meet adversity head on.

UR 2005
Acrylic And Collage On Wood Panel
2004-2005
60 x 48 inches
The standard of Ur, or Ur is a collage and acrylic painting on wood panel. The work is 6’x 4’. It depicts a green hooded figure who is falling forward. The painting itself was inspired or influenced by a series of photographs that came out of Iraq during the second gulf war. These photographs depicted images of miss treated Iraqi prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison. Although the content of this work was conceived by these photographs, my goal and hope are that it transcends beyond this and reflects and calls attention to a condemnation of man’s mistreatment to his fellow man, the age-old complexities of the conflicts of the peoples of the middle east and in a more universal way, the human condition. The title of the painting references an ancient Sumerian artifact called The Standard of Ur, which was a military standard found in the ancient city of Ur, located in central Iraq. The painting’s composition also references Caravaggio’s Entombment of Christ.
