Firehawk 1997
Oil, Acrylic And Collage On Canvas 1997
48 x 60 inches
The painting Firehawk, completed in 1997 has the same compositional format as the Snake Charmer. It also references a famous work of art, the composer, Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Firebird. In this painting on the bottom right side, there are three Xerox copies of a man standing in front of an old airplane. Represented in that photograph is my grandfather who built propellers and the airplane in the picture (1929).
The painting Snake Charmer also completed in 1997 gets its title from a famous painting of the same name from the artist Henri Rousseau. It also references the the format association with the work of Jasper John’s completed in the 1980’s and an early work of his Target with four faces completed in the late fifties. Where on the left side can you see at the top four collages Xerox copies of the cobra mustang logo, and underneath a coiled air hose, this is a reference to John’s is painting. target with four faces.
Most of the works completed between 1997 through 2002 had subject matter associated with manual labor jobs I had during the time of making these image. These jobs consisted of being a Tire Technician at a Tire store and as Grounds worker at a golf course. These works, like all of my works were and continue to related to Art History
